On August 18 at 7:00 p.m., youth, families, and ward members gathered for a fun-filled Combined Mutual Ice Cream Social with a 1950s theme. The Shoal Creek Ward was also invited to join us for an evening centered on family history, fellowship, and plenty of old-fashioned fun.

The Young Women dressed in colorful 1950s-style outfits and helped bring the decade to life. Activities included hula hoops, hopscotch, and even a “drive-in movie” set up on the stage, complete with popcorn. The Young Men served delicious ice cream sundaes, which were a perfect addition to the evening.

Family history was an important part of the activity. The Young Women were encouraged to research their grandparents and learn more about their family connections. Throughout the evening, we heard quotes from President David O. McKay, who served as President of the Church during the 1950s, and learned about four temples that were dedicated during that decade.

One of the highlights was trying to guess ward members from their baby pictures. We also enjoyed seeing photographs of grandparents and learning how they were connected to the Young Women in the ward. It was a wonderful reminder that family history is really about people, relationships, and the stories that connect generations.

The Young Women even taught the Bunny Hop to anyone willing to give it a try! With around 50 or more people in attendance, the gym was full of laughter, conversation, dancing, and support for the youth.

A great deal of thought and preparation went into the evening, and it showed. We are grateful to the youth and leaders who planned such a creative activity and to the many ward members who came to support them. It was a memorable night of family history, friendship, ice cream, and 1950s fun!
